Contemporary art is finally, after more than a century, hitting its stride in the Boston area. In yesterday’s Globe Magazine, I picked 10 pieces of contemporary art (well, individual works and solo shows) to check out this summer at area museums and galleries. It’s a fun list, from Josiah McElheney’s “Some Pictures of the Infinite,” in a solo show opening at the ICA this week, to Gonkar Gyatso’s “Radioactive” Buddha at the MFA’s “Seeking Shambhala” show and “Canada de Fantaisie,” a whirligig of a DIY-type installation in Mass MoCA’s “Oh, Canada” exhibition. And much more, with thoughts about what, exactly, makes them contemporary.
